History

The First Meeting was Held on 1st April 1950 at the Clayton Public Hall (now demolished) and approximately 50 Ladies Attended. Our First President was Alma Bell, Vice President was Nan Sweetland and Mrs.Ernshaw, Treasurer Mrs.M.Pack, Secretary Mrs.L.Price.

Meetings were held in the Hall until 1952,when we decided each member would be the Hostess Tea and Coffee only and Attendees a plate of supper, this continued until the House was purchased by Dr.Best and Mr.A.Whalley. Then we held our First Meeting in the RSL Club September 9/1953. We have held Bazaars, street stalls, BBQs, cooking competitions, mannequin parades and debutante balls. We have also been cleaners on a couple of occasions and paid Electric Light Accounts. We had 3 Carpet Bowls teams and played against East Malvern, Malvern, Prahran, Mentone, Mordialloc, Bentleigh and Cheltenham Auxiliary's. The Winners South of the Yarra played the Winners of the North Side.

One Year we would go to Adelaide to play bowls, the following year we would entertain the Adelaide Ladies and some of the ladies opened their homes for a BBQ so we could all get to know one another before the competition started.

A small group of our ladies visited nursing homes and took gifts to the Veterans and War Widows. At one time we had our own ward at Kingston centre. We have knitted clothes for premature babies, babies overseas with Aids, plus knitted rugs for McDonalds House and Nursing Homes. Involved with the selling of Anzac, Legacy and Poppy Tokens and Mail outs.

Attended RSL and Auxiliarys Conferences. In the early days some ladies cooked rabbits (supplied by the late Snowy Burls), made sandwiches for smoke nights and special occasions and we are still involved with Wakes. 3 Ladies help at Bingo; Marg, Nan(60 years) and Yvonne. Our Monthly Meetings are attended by approximately 14 Ladies, and new members would be most welcome. We still have 3 Foundation Members Alma Bell, Lillian Price and Nan Sweetland.
